Gemma Hanes

Biography:

Dr Gemma Hanes is a General Paediatrician with an interest in disadvantaged and displaced populations. She works in the multidisciplinary Perth Children's Hospital Refugee Health Service and has clinical experience in comprehensive management of refugee and asylum seeker children and adolescents, delivering trauma-informed care in order to improve health, educational, and psychosocial outcomes in this population. Dr Hanes has previously described the range of adverse childhood experiences in the refugee/asylum seeker setting (R-ACE) and expands on the health, educational, and psychosocial needs of asylum seeker children/adolescents managed by RHS in Western Australia. Asylum seekers report high rates of trauma and difficulty accessing health and educational services. The majority of Western Australian asylum seekers assessed demonstrated negative health or education sequelae compounded by detention not previously identified prior to comprehensive paediatric review
