Making a Difference to Children’s Health: Participatory Approaches in Childhood Onset Disability Research

This brief presentation provides an overview of research initiatives at the CanChild Centre for Childhood-onset Disability Research at McMaster University, Hamilton, ON, Canada. Throughout the history of family engagement, CanChild scientists have evolved from engaging families on an informal basis to become research partners and co-investigators. We now also include children with disabilities actively shaping our research, becoming active in the recruitment of participants, and reflecting on the analysis of results, as well as sharing their experiences at scientific meetings.

This year’s workshop focuses on challenging child health topics in primary care, and some of the long-term issues that often you are called on to co-manage whilst waiting for your patients/clients to survive the wait times for public paediatric clinics. 

  • Common rashes in paediatrics (Dr Andrew Ming, Adult and Paediatric Dermatologist)
  • Paediatric Respiratory Infection + Vaccination update – RSV + Flu + COVID + Mycoplasma (Prof Nigel Crawford, Chair of ATAGI, Head of Immunisation Service at Royal Children’s Hospital)
  • Adolescent medicine for the Primary Care Practitioner  focusing on ARFID (Dr Michele Yeo, Adolescent Physician, Medical Lead for Eating Disorder Service at Royal Children’s Hospital)

ACAH ran a very successful series of student webinars in conjunction with AMSA (Australian Medical Student Association). With nearly 700 registrations, this collaboration enabled students to have access to the important topics of child and adolescent health career pathways, refugee health and mental health.
